Hand Gong

Hand Gong main accompanying musical instrument widely used in local drama, folk music, entertainment and holiday activities

The Hand Gong can be called as Xiao gong, both of which mean small. During Yuan Dynasty, the hand 

gong was used as an main accompanying musical instrument. It was very popular in both palace and 

folk. Along with the development of Theatre Arts, the hand gong went east to Europe and became the 

only Chinese musical instrument in orchestral music works of Gosseck, a famous French composer.

Since 20th century, the hand gong has been widely used in local drama, folk music, entertainment and 

holiday activities. Besides, it's also used by vendors to attract business along the streets.

The hand gong is made of copper, the diameter is about six and an half inch. It's a small disc and the 

centre bulges a little. If you beat it with a splint, it gives bright, resonant, clear and melodious sound. A 

descending gong will produce its initial tone upon being struck and then after approximately 2 or 3 beats 

the pitch will bend lower (descend).

There is no fixed pitch for this kind of gong. A descending gong will produce its initial tone upon being
